Steps 1-2-3

Step 1 is a two part statement of the problem.

Step 1 – We admitted we were powerless over compulsively overeating – (Part 1)

If, when you are eating, you lose control over the amount of food that you eat, you may have a manifestation of an allergy of the body. When normal eaters overeat they feel full and stop eating whenever they want to. When a compulsive overeater overeats his/her reaction is quite different from a normal eater. With the compulsive overeater, overeating can trigger an allergy of the body that causes the body to crave more. This craving is an abnormal reaction and sets compulsive overeaters apart from normal eaters. The craving causes overeating beyond mental control. Normal eaters never experience this craving.

– that our lives had become unmanageable. (Part 2)

If, when you honestly want to stop, but can’t manage the decision to stop compulsively overeating and stay stopped, your life is unmanageable. You have an obsession of the mind.

If, you have an allergy of the body and an obsession of the mind, you are powerless to stop overeating. If this is the case, your defense must come from a High Power.

Step 2 is the solution.

Step 2 – Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

“Lack of power, that was our dilemma. We had to find a power by which we could live, and it had to be A Power Greater Than Ourselves. Obviously. But where and how were we to find this Power?” “Well, that’s exactly what this book is about. Its main object is to enable you to find a Power greater than yourself, which will solve your problem.” (AA page 45)

Step 3 is a decision to “surrender” and work the rest of the steps to the best of your ability.

Step 3 – Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

If you are a compulsive overeater, “we believe there is no middle-of-the-road solution. We were in a position where life was becoming impossible, and if we had passed into the region from which there is no return through human aid, we had but two alternatives: One was to go on to the bitter end, blotting out the consciousness of our intolerable situation as best we could; and the other, to accept spiritual help.” (AA page 25)

We are responsible. When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, we want the hand of OA Hour of Power always to be there. And for that: We are responsible.
