NEWCOMERS TO OVEREATERS ANONYMOUS
Welcome to the “OA Hour of Power”! We are grateful you have found our Fellowship. In order for you to get to know us better, we offer the following suggestions:
1. Please read “The First Three Steps” to get some clarity on our problem and the solution offered in the Big Book.
2. In our “Meetings and Sharing ID’s” section, you will see how to access both live and recorded OA Hour of Power telephone meetings, as well as familiarize yourself with our meeting format. In order to avoid confusion about the nature of our disease, we ONLY identify ourselves as compulsive overeaters in our meetings. Although everyone is welcome to read and/or share, our meetings are not an open discussion format; thus, we share only on what was read from the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book or the Alcoholics Anonymous Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions.
3. We are sure you have many questions and we hope they will be answered in our “Frequently Asked Questions” section. Please email us at email@example.com so we can share more information with you or answer any further questions.
4. If you would like someone from the OA Hour of Power to guide you through the Twelve Steps following the precise, exact, clear-cut directions in the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book, please contact us via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. A sponsor will contact you by email or phone within 48 hours.
NEWCOMERS TO THE OA HOUR OF POWER
Are you happy, joyous, and free? Or do you feel restless, irritable, and discontent? We hope it brings you comfort to know that many of our members, who now consider themselves RECOVERED, had previously been in bondage to compulsive overeating and self will and knew no happiness, joy, or freedom even while abstinent.
What is the solution that brought the first 100 recovered alcoholics and many members of the OA Hour of Power from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body to being recovered? The answer is a spiritual solution found in living the Twelve Steps according to the directions in the AA Big Book.
Some of our members came here because they had relapsed over and over again. They were not working the spiritual program in the AA Big Book or had become “spiritually unfit”; they had returned to compulsive overeating. To us, relapse means we quit following (or never followed) the clear-cut directions in the Big Book and got off the path. When we traced our relapse histories back, we noted that we had long since abandoned growth along spiritual lines (or else we failed to grow spiritually at all) LONG before the food got crazy. Typically, we have forgotten about Step 2 and are living as if we are God again and we believe we can restore OURSELVES to sanity! Relapse also means that we have forgotten about Step 3; we have quit surrendering our will and our lives to God and are trying to run the show again. Thus, relapsing is a re-emergence of self. It’s saying “yes” to ourselves and saying “no” to God. We relapsed because we stopped trusting in God and cleaning house; our houses got dirty again and we were blocked from the Sunlight of the Spirit.
Because we have a spiritual malady, our problem centers in our minds and not our bodies. Focusing on the body and food will never address our spiritual problem and allows us to stay in bondage to self. We suggest you read Jim’s story on page 35 in the AA Big Book– note that he kept relapsing. Note that he acquired knowledge about alcoholism and all went well for a time, but he failed to enlarge his spiritual life. Note the mental insanity he had before he took that drink (he thought he could handle it if he drank milk). Had Jim been spiritually fit and living a God-directed life, he would have seen the TRUTH of his insane thinking and not taken that drink. Because he was not spiritually well, he only heard his lie. He was without effective mental defense against the first drink.
Read the 10th step promises on Pg 84:
“And we have ceased fighting anything or anyone- even alcohol. For by this time sanity will have returned. We will seldom be interested in liquor. If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame. We react sanely and normally, and we will find that this has happened automatically. We will see that our new attitude toward liquor has been given us without any thought or effort on our part. It just comes! That is the miracle of it. We are not fighting it, neither are we avoiding temptation. We feel as though we had been placed in a position of neutrality- safe and protected. We have not even sworn off. Instead, the problem has been removed. It does not exist for us. We are neither cocky nor are we afraid. That is our experience. That is how we react so long as we keep in fit spiritual condition.”
Perhaps you have told yourself these promises never truly materialize for anyone; that no one recovers from compulsive overeating; that we are all just “recovering one day at a time”; and always one bite away. Have you told yourself that if you strayed from your formula that you would fail? Do you believe that spiritual solutions and miracles won’t happen for you? We encourage you to lay aside your prejudices and fixed ideas and be willing to have a new experience – a spiritual experience.
We believe that the Big Book speaks the Truth and will help you to find the Truth. We have RECOVERED. We have been restored to sanity. Our mental obsession has been lifted. We are no longer fighting anything or anyone, including food. The Big Book tells the Truth. It was true for the first 100 and it will be true for you. Come and join us in the OA Hour of Power and abandon yourself to God as you understand God. Admit your faults to Him and your fellows. Clear away the wreckage of your past. Give freely of what you find and join us. We shall be with you in the Fellowship of the Sprit, and you will surely meet some of us as you trudge the Road of Happy Destiny. May God bless you and keep you – until then.
